Is it enough to build Open-Source drivers for its VPU ?

Yes. There's even two v4l drivers in progress for the coda9xx vpu:
https://lwn.net/Articles/502587/
These still need closed source firmware for the bit processor, but the ARM side is open.

The VPU block is from Chips and media:

http://www.chipsnmedia.com/product_search/product_view.php?part_idx=20&idx=53 The VPU requires proprietary firmware. This is the only part preventing the iMX6 from being FSF-Endorseable.

Has the GPU been reverse-engineered?

YES. https://github.com/laanwj/etna_viv/wiki

What's pricing like for the iMX6 CPUs?
